Own the answer, not just the ranking
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so search engines surface it as a direct answer: in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice search results. It uses question-format headings, 40-60 word answer capsules and FAQ schema to make content extractable by answer engines.
The answer position is the new position one
When Google shows an AI Overview or featured snippet, the answer absorbs most of the attention before any classic listing is seen. For question-style queries, definitions, costs, comparisons and how-tos, being the cited answer matters more than ranking beneath it. AEO is the discipline of winning that position deliberately rather than occasionally.
What an AEO programme includes
- Query mapping. The question-format queries your buyers ask, mapped against your current answer coverage and your competitors'.
- Answer capsule framework. Concise 40-60 word answers placed under question-format headings on every key page: the block format answer engines extract.
- FAQ build and schema. Structured FAQ content with full FAQPage markup across service pages and articles, typically 20 or more questions covering your category.
- Content restructuring. Editing existing pages into answer-ready formats without losing their voice or depth.
- Tracking. Featured snippet, People Also Ask and AI Overview appearance monitoring through Search Console and rank tools.
AEO and GEO together
AEO targets the answer surfaces inside search engines; GEO targets generative AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The content formats overlap heavily, a well-built answer capsule serves both, so we usually run them as one programme with two measurement tracks. Read the explainers: What is AEO? and What is GEO?
AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation: common questions
How is AEO different from normal SEO content writing?
Classic SEO content optimises a page to rank for keywords. AEO structures content so a machine can extract a complete answer: a question heading, an immediate 40-60 word response, then supporting depth. The discipline is in the format and schema, not just the topic.
Which queries should a business target with AEO?
Definitional queries (what is X), cost queries (how much does X cost), process queries (how long does X take) and comparison queries (X vs Y). These trigger answer features most often and sit closest to buying decisions.
Does AEO content rank in normal results too?
Yes. Answer-ready structure does not weaken classic rankings; clear headings and concise summaries tend to help them. The same page can hold a classic ranking, a featured snippet and an AI Overview citation simultaneously.
