Be the business AI engines recommend
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?
GEO is the practice of making a business visible and citable in generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. It combines structured data, entity optimisation, llms.txt deployment and citable content so that when users ask an AI engine for providers, products or answers in your category, your business appears in the response.
Why GEO matters now
A growing share of buying research never touches a search results page. Users ask ChatGPT for "the best AI consultancy in Singapore" or ask Perplexity to compare providers, and the engine answers directly, citing the sources it trusts. If your site gives AI engines nothing structured to read, you are absent from those answers regardless of how good your Google rankings are.
The category is young. Most businesses, including most agencies, have deployed none of the GEO foundations. Moving early means owning citation positions before the space gets crowded.
What a GEO programme includes
- Entity foundation. Organization, ProfessionalService, Service and Person schema connected with sameAs links to LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories, so AI engines resolve your business to a single verified entity.
- llms.txt and ai.txt deployment. Structured plain-language files at your site root that describe your business, services and content map directly to AI crawlers and agents. Read more in our explainer: What is llms.txt?
- Citable content architecture. Pillar and cluster content with clear definitions, first-party data and answer capsules: the formats AI engines preferentially cite.
- AI visibility monitoring. Baseline and ongoing tracking of how your brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude for your target queries, so progress is measured, not assumed.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO optimises for ranking positions on a results page; GEO optimises for inclusion in a generated answer. They share foundations, clean technical structure and authoritative content, but GEO adds machine-readable entity signals and answer-ready formats that classic SEO programmes ignore. The two work best together, which is why our audits score both. For a fuller comparison, read What is GEO?
GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation: common questions
How do AI engines choose which businesses to cite?
AI engines favour entities they can verify and content they can lift cleanly: consistent business details across the web, structured data that states who you are and what you do, and content with clear definitions and first-party evidence. GEO builds exactly those signals.
How long before GEO shows results?
Foundations (schema, llms.txt, entity consistency) are typically live within two to four weeks. Citation improvements in AI engines usually appear over one to three months as crawlers revisit and content earns references. We baseline your visibility before starting so movement is measurable.
Is GEO worth it if we already rank well in Google?
Yes. Google rankings and AI citations are separate outcomes. A site can hold position one in Google and be invisible to ChatGPT users asking the same question. GEO protects the share of buying research that has moved into AI conversations.
